Building for the Next Generation

The new building for our Children and Student Ministries is taking shape. The St. Clair Times has a couple photos I think you might enjoy, here.

You can see the project as it has developed on the North Valley Church Facebook page. This is an exciting time for North Valley. This building will be used at least 6 days a week for the Early Learning Center, Sunday Children's Ministry and Student Ministry. We are looking forward to the many ways God will use this building to reach the next generation.

Captives Without Chains

The church was warned about a danger in their midst. Importantly, the danger came into the church.

1. Be aware! A lie can sound like the truth.

Colossians 2:4 I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments.

What sounds “normal” and persuasive may be destructive and dangerous.

· Absolutes: Define the core beliefs of Christian faith.

· Convictions: While not core beliefs, these may have significant impact on the health and effectiveness of the church.

· Opinions: Views or personal judgments generally not worth dividing over.

· Questions: Currently unsettled issues.

How do we know where an issue falls?

Where an issue falls within these categories should be determined by weighing the cumulative force of at least seven considerations:

1. Biblical Clarity

2. Relevance to the Character of God

3. Relevance to the Essence of the Gospel

4. Biblical Frequency and Significance (how often in Scripture it is taught, and what weight Scripture places upon it)

5. Effect on other Doctrines

6. Consensus among Christians (past and present)

7. Effect on Personal and Church Life

2. Be real! Faith must be committed to practice.

Colossians 2:5-7 For though I am absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the firmness of your faith in Christ. Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, ⁷ rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

3. Be evasive! Dangerous forces are lurking.

Colossians 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

“Captive” is the word used for “plundering of cargo from a ship.”

Evade the Devil and false teachers. Almost every book in the New Testament has something to say about false teaching and those who advance false doctrines. False prophets, false christs, false understandings of Jesus, false apostles, false gospels, and other aberrations have been matters of concern since the time of Jesus.

From the viewpoint of those who hold to historic Christianity, a “cult” is a religious movement which claims to be based on the Bible or Christian faith and advocates beliefs which are significantly different than the plain teachings of the Bible.

Cults invariably diverge from historic Christianity in their answer of two questions: Who is Jesus? How does one follow Jesus as a true believer?

4. Be triumphant! Align yourself with Jesus Christ.

Colossians 2:9-15 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, ¹⁰ and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. ¹¹ In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, ¹² having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. ¹³ And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, ¹⁴ by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. ¹⁵ He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Just Jesus

The religious group that was impacting the Colossians would not deny the importance of Jesus. By all means, Jesus is important. These people simply did not want Jesus to be made “too” important.
Jesus, perhaps to the false teachers of the day, was just one of many ways that God had reached down to save people.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

No grouping of sentences in the entire Bible has more to say about who Jesus is than this one.

1. Jesus is Savior.

Colossians 1:13-14 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Sin can never be resolved by philosophy or religion. Sinners need the Savior. Jesus “delivered us”, which means rescued from danger. Jesus delivered us from the powers of darkness.

The gnostic false teachers believed in a hierarchy of evil spirits that controlled the world. Jesus is greater than any force of darkness.

Jesus did not simply move us from darkness into the Wilderness. He brought us from darkness immediately into light.

Through Jesus, we have “redemption.” This word means to “release a prisoner by payment of a ransom” (Wiersbe). Jesus did not pay a ransom to Satan. He met the holy demands of the Law of God.

Redemption and forgiveness are partners in God’s salvation story. Forgiveness means to “cancel a debt” or “to send away.” Jesus has cancelled every debt so that we would not be slaves to sin again.

Matthew 18:21-35 (please don’t turn there), tells the story of the Unforgiving Servant. Because we have been forgiven, we can forgive other people!

2. Jesus is Creator.

Colossians 1:15-17 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

The false teachers in Paul’s day were misinformed about Creation. They believed that matter/substance was evil. Jesus could not have a real body because God would not take on evil matter. Also, they believed, your body is evil—so, you should enslave it or enjoy it.

“Firstborn” does not refer to time. It is refers to place of importance in the order of things.

The word “image” is important. Jesus is the exact representation of God.

Hebrews 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Jesus “created” all things. Because Jesus created “all” things, it is clear that Jesus Himself was not a created thing.

John 1:3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Everything exists “for” Him.

1 Timothy 6:17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

3. Jesus is the Source.

Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.

No denomination can claim to be “the” body of Christ. The Body of Christ is comprised of all true believers.

Jesus is the “Head.” Head in the original language indicates “source.” It can also mean “origin” or “leader.” Whichever translation is selected, it means that Jesus is in charge of all.

No believer on earth is the head of the church.

4. Jesus is Reconciler.

Colossians 1:19-20 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

God's Favor

One of the most inspiring comments in the Christmas story is the angel’s statement to Mary: “You have found favor with God” (Luke 1:30, ESV). Of all of the women on the planet, God chose to do something special in Mary’s life. God gave her His favor—His special blessing. Mary would be the earthly parent to the God-man, Jesus Christ our Savior.

Mary is humbled by this tremendous blessing. However, she responds as we often do; Mary tries to figure out how God is going to accomplish this great blessing in her life. “How can this be since I am a virgin?” she pondered aloud (Luke 1:34). In my own life, I have felt similarly. I wonder how God is going to accomplish the great things He has promised.

Some people find it difficult accepting blessings and favor. Some of us struggle with low self-esteem. We struggle with our worth in the eyes of others. Sometimes we doubt the value God has placed upon our lives. We can all learn from the response of Mary—a young woman with many reasons to doubt her own worth. She was a young girl in a society that devalued women. Mary was poor. Her people were oppressed. Yet, she was open to receive a life-transforming gift from God. Eventually, she embraced God’s favor and exclaimed, “Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

Blessings are also difficult for those who are comfortable with their position in life. Have you noticed that when blessings come to certain people, they often do things that self-sabotage their potential success? Opportunities are squandered. Money is burned. Second, third and fourth chances are washed down the drain. Out of fear, people sabotage their success. Why? Because they are afraid to envision what life could be like if it were better or different. Mary was willing to step up and receive a new calling. She said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.”

Blessings are often disguised as difficulties. Mary was engaged to be married. Her plans—in her own mind—were set. Undoubtedly, she loved Joseph. Joseph loved Mary. They had dreams and hopes for their future which did not include being exiles in Egypt. Their dreams did not include being the guardians for a special Child who would be the most galvanizing figure in the history of the world. Mary and Joseph painted an entirely different picture of what life would be like. This dilemma took place two millennia ago. Yet, it sounds so contemporary.

Young men and women start out their lives with ideals for their futures. They know what kind of person they want to marry. They know what career they wish to pursue. They hold on to beliefs or traditions that are so important that they cannot be changed—not even by God. However, God has a way of doing the unexpected in our lives. We may not see the changes God brings as “favor” or blessings. As we walk down life’s pathway we discover along the way that God knew best.

Has God allowed something unexpected to transform your life this year? Has your vision for your life been revised by a radical shift in your family, finances, faith or future? Perhaps God has blessed you with heavenly favor. Christmas is a time to remember that blessings involve change. Do not be afraid of God’s divine intervention in your life! The story of Mary reminds us that God’s favor transcends our own plans.

God’s is Always “Home” for the Holidays

Someone once said, talking to yourself isn't always a sign of old age. In this day and time it may be the only way to be sure someone is listening. Do you feel like no one listens? Do you feel alone? The holidays can be a time of loneliness for various reasons. However, it is important to remember that if Jesus is our Savior, He is always “home” in our hearts for the holidays.

There is good news for those who feel alone: God is always listening. God is always near. The Apostle Paul once asked, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” The answer to that question is clear. No person or thing can separate you from God’s love and presence—not even difficulty or loneliness. I hope this truth brings a sense of comfort to you.

John G. Paton was a pioneer missionary in the New Hebrides. He went to the mission field as a young man with a young bride. When their first child was born, the child died and the wife died. He buried them with his own hands. Because he was among cannibals, he sat over the grave for many days and nights to prevent them from digging up the bodies. His testimony was that if the Lord Jesus Christ had not made Himself real to him during that time, he would have gone mad.

Dave Dravecky wrote, “Looking back, [my wife] Jan and I have learned that the wilderness is part of the landscape of faith, and every bit as essential as the mountaintop. On the mountaintop we are overwhelmed by God's presence. In the wilderness we are overwhelmed by his absence. Both places should bring us to our knees; the one, in utter awe; the other, in utter dependence.” (Dave Dravecky in When You Can't Come Back).

Going through difficulty? God is near. He is listening. He wants to be near to you this holiday season. God loves you very much. He is at home in our lives, even when it seems that no one else is around. God is always home for holidays.

Take Up Your Cross

Take Up Your Cross

Matthew indicates that Jesus has entered a new phase of His ministry. For the first time, Jesus makes it clear that His purpose involved death. John the Baptist did introduce Jesus as the Lamb of God. However, the disciples did not understand what that truly meant.

Matthew 16:21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

Peter was horrified at the reality that Jesus would suffer and die. “Far be it from you. This shall never happen to you,” Peter said. Jesus rebuked Peter.

Matthew 16:23 "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man."

Jesus told Peter that a gospel of triumph without a Cross was something directly from Satan. Peter’s mind was influenced by Satan. When Satan had tempted Jesus, he offered Jesus the kingdoms of the world at the simple bowing of the knee.

Before we condemn Peter too quickly, we must admit that Peter was thinking like any of us would think. Peter wanted a good outcome that would not involve suffering, pain or death. Peter had the faith to believe that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God. However, Peter lacked the faith to believe that it was Jesus’ destiny to die.

Jesus’ greatest disciple began speaking out of fear. Jesus directs Peter to think toward God’s eternal purpose and plan. Jesus must suffer and die for our sins and be raised from the dead.

What Jesus shares with His disciples contains a great challenge to us. We have a choice concerning how we approach our lives today. The closest word to disciple (mathetes) we have today is the word “apprentice.” This is becoming a daily follower of someone in a hands-on learning experience. It is not a student who sits at a desk and learns from lectures and books.

To those of us who wish to be Jesus’ apprentices today, Jesus presents to us a serious decision we must make.

Matthew 16:24-27 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

Seven decisions for life transformation:

1. Will you deny yourself or live for yourself?

To deny yourself does not mean to live as a monk. It does mean that in whatever context God has placed you, you live your life totally devoted to Jesus Christ.

Philippians 3:7-8 But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.

From the human perspective we lose ourselves (our motives, our attitudes, our goals and dreams); from God’s perspective we find Christ and become like Him. When we do this, we become the person that God intended for us to be.

2. Will you take up your cross or ignore the cross?

To take up your cross does not mean to deal with a burden or problem. Specifically, it means to identify with the Crucified Jesus Christ in His shame and suffering.

The Greek word for cross was a reference to a pointed stake used to form the walks of a defensive fence/wall. Bodies of executed individuals were displayed publicly on the wall to discourage disobedience and to mock those who had been defeated.

Such a scene of horror was not prescribed by the Jewish law. Bodies were not allowed to remain on display overnight. This set the Jews apart from the other nations who allowed victims to rot in public.

To identify with a Cross in the disciples day would be a foolish thought. Why would anyone wish to be associated with an instrument of torture and death? It makes no sense whatsoever. The men and women of that day would have never thought of wearing a cross of gold around the neck. Jesus spoke of the Cross before His death. How awful it must have been for Jesus to know that this was His destiny.

3. Will you follow Christ or follow the world?

Jesus made it plain that following Him was to surrender completely to Him. You cannot follow Him and follow the world simultaneously.

Following Jesus is a step by step process. It is a day to day series of choices and consequences. That makes it difficult for many people. We like to live in special experiences and coast in between—instead of being consistent.

Following Jesus is voluntary, but never optional. Discipleship begins with conversion. Christians are saved to serve.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Discipleship is living out the confession that Jesus is Lord.

4. Will you lose your life for Jesus’ sake or save your own life for your own sake?

We can waste our lives on things which do not matter. Or, we can invest our lives into things of eternal significance. Once we have spent our time and energy, we cannot get those things back.

To save your life is to lose it? What on earth could that mean? How do you get it back again when you lose it? Jesus doesn’t seem to be making sense here.

The Jews had renounced Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus calls on his followers to renounce themselves.

5. Will you reject the world or gain the world?

You can gain the world and be a success in the eyes of the people around you. However, in the process of gaining the world, you lose the most important thing. You have nothing to show for your life when you stand before God.

If you gain the whole world, it still would not be enough to buy another chance at life—to purchase another opportunity to do things the right way. If a person had a deed to every piece of property in the whole world, he would still be too poor to buy back a life lost to selfishness.

6. Will you keep your soul or lose your soul?

Jesus was speaking with His disciples here. These were men who had already confessed Him as the Savior sent from God. He was instructing them on how to make the most of their investment on this earth. Losing your soul is the equivalent of wasting one’s life.

It makes no sense to try to preserve your own life—as a coward. All the while, you lose everything of significance when you eventually die anyway. The wise thing to do is to invest for the Kingdom—your time, your ability, and your resources—in what will make a difference for eternity.

7. Will you share His reward and glory or lose His reward and glory?

Satan promises you glory, but in the end gives you only suffering. Jesus Christ promises you suffering, but in the end gives you glory! (Wiersbe)

1 Corinthians 15:24-26 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

To live for Jesus Christ, one must be willing to give up the things of this world—even relationships that are important.

“Thanksgiving is Remembering God’s Faithfulness”

Being thankful is about remembering. I am usually too busy thinking about the present and the future to reflect upon the past. With three young children, our family is on the go nonstop. Thanksgiving is a time of year when I do make a point to reflect upon the blessings in my life. Remembering is something we all struggle to do.

The great men of the Old Testament built monuments to remember. Joshua and the priests of Israel set up two monuments made of twelve stones. These monuments were to help future generations remember how God had led them across the Jordan River into the Promised Land. One twelve-stone monument was placed in the actual riverbed where the people walked across upon dry ground as God held the waters back. The other monument was built on the side of victory—the place where God allowed them entrance to the place they had longed to be for many years.

Before Joshua, men like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob built altars to mark a place where they encountered God. These men gathered stones and built simple, crude altars as if to say, “God met me in this place.” Of course, the people would offer sacrifices upon those altars and spend time worshiping God in those sacred places. These altars seem to have been constructed spontaneously; perhaps it was the natural response of these men to set up a marker where God had made a difference in their life.

People still set up monuments today. Church buildings are monuments in our communities that remind us that “God is at work in this place.” Believers give, work and sacrifice to build markers which tell the story of God’s faithfulness. Even gravestones in cemeteries remind us of a great people who have lived and have gone on to meet God.

Monuments and reminders do not necessarily need to be made out of stone and mortar. In my own life, I have kept notes in my journal and Bible. I also keep cards, pictures and other keepsakes. Yet, the greatest monuments in my life have been intangible.

Often, when God does something great in my personal life or my family I set up a spiritual monument. I will tell God something like this, “God help me remember your goodness in my life. When things in the future do not go as well as today, I want to remember your faithfulness to me.” This is has been a breakthrough for me. These spiritual milestones have given me a lot of encouragement when life does not go as I had hoped.

Many of us live our lives in fast forward. It is good to press pause or rewind. It is better to hit the record button and remember. This Thanksgiving as you baste the turkey and spread the table, stop and set up a spiritual monument. Thank God for the blessings He has given to you.

Take in every moment with your family. Life is too short to live with resentment, bitterness and regret. Remember God’s faithfulness in your life. When tomorrow’s troubles come—and they will—go back to the monument you made when encountered God’s blessings in your life.

Chase is our new Minister to Students. Chase graduated from Mississippi College at the top of his class in political science and Christian studies. He won the preaching award three years in a row. His roots are in Picayune, MS. Welcome Chase! Here is his faith story....

Born and raised into a Christian home, I have attended church my entire life. Truthfully, I had the call to ministry and salvation experience backwards, for I was claiming that I wanted to be a preacher before I became a Christian! Once my parents and pastor clarified the appropriate order of events, I officially accepted Christ on May 11, 1995 (coinciding with Mother’s Day and the dedication of my little brother to the church). Experiences at a student retreat in 2002 confirmed for me that I had been called to some sort of vocational ministry, a call which I made official on July 28, 2002.

For the next several years, I struggled with God’s call upon my life. I became very involved in various secular leadership and extracurricular activities, which were beneficial, but also increased my desire for money and fame in the world. Even what I decided to study in college reflected the tension in my life: Christian Studies and Political Science. My intention was to pursue joint degrees in ministry and law, and somehow use my Christianity to get involved in the political realm. All of that changed on April 1, 2008.

On that day, I lost the election for student government president. It destroyed me, and completely humbled me. However, God always works in ways we cannot fully understand, and within two weeks, God had provided me with an opportunity to serve in my first church ministry position. God used the ministry to teach me who I was as a child of God and a minister of the gospel. I now know beyond a shadow of a doubt that my calling in life is to preach and teach the Word of God. Thus, I have dedicated myself to the further study of ministry and the Bible, and am committed to finding opportunities to proclaim the grace God has shown me.

Was Jesus a Good Teacher?

The Sermon on the Mount was given by Jesus while seated. Jesus is the greatest Rabbi. This signified by Him taking the Law, which was predominately given in the negative, and turning it around “inside out” to a positive teaching message.

Moses went up on the mountain to receive the Law; he came back down. However, Jesus sat on the mountain and delivered the law—calling people to live on top of the mountain.

Jesus spoke to “disciples.” These were not just the Twelve. These were people like you and me. These were ordinary men and women who wanted to hear what Jesus had to say.

Jesus presents to us the most beautiful and difficult truths in the Word of God. Can anyone really live by the Sermon on the Mount in the real world? Can anyone actually do what Jesus says and still survive in the real world?

1. It’s not about what others think: Jesus taught us that we cannot “perform” to achieve God’s approval.

Christianity is not a performance-based religion.

o You cannot give enough…

Matthew 6:1-2 "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. 2 "Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.”

The word “have” in the phrase “have their reward” is the same word used on receipts at that time meaning “paid in full.”

o You cannot pray well enough…

Matthew 6:5 "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.”

Matthew 6:7-8 "And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

Jesus taught us how to pray simply…

(Three requests for the kingdom)

Our Father in heaven, hallowed by your name.

Your kingdom come.

Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

(Three requests for this life… until the kingdom comes)

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.

And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

o You cannot look “spiritual” enough…

Matthew 6:16 "And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.”

2. It’s about what God thinks: Jesus taught us that we can be blessed only when we fully trust in God.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.

Christianity is a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

o Depend on God, not material things.

Matthew 6:19-20 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, ²⁰ but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

This verse does not mean it is sinful to prepare for the future or our children’s future.

Proverbs 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.

o Trust in God without worry or fear.

Matthew 6:25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”

Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6:34 "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”

o Let God’s grace flow through you to others.

Matthew 7:1-2 "Judge not, that you be not judged. ² For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”

This does not mean that a Christian never judges. Some judgment is required to carry out our mission. The point is this: Christians should not have a spirit of faultfinding and constant criticism. Love keeps no record of wrongs.

A Reason for Hope

Peter wrote this little letter to get the Christians ready for the difficulties of persecution.

1. Christians are called to display love in the face of evil.

1 Peter 3:8-12 Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. 9 Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 10 For "Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; 11 let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."

“Unity of mind” is not uniformity. It means cooperation in the context of diversity. We can disagree on “how” things should be done; however, we all agree on “what” should be done.

D.L. Moody, a great preacher, had a critic who complained to him about his methods of sharing the Gospel. Moody said, “Well, I am always ready for improvement. What are your methods?” The man confessed that he did not have any. “Then I will stick to my own,” said Moody.

“Sympathy” is not being hardhearted toward each other. In the Roman Empire, this was not a popular quality. However, the message of the Gospel changed that. In our culture, we hear so much negative news and talk, we can become immune to the hurts of others.

“Humble mindedness” is being willing to consider another person’s point of view.

Peter prepares the readers of this letter for the official persecution which was about to take place. Today, we had better take heed; things are about to get much worse.

Three Levels of Dealing with Evil

· The Satanic Level: Returning evil for good.

· The Human Level: Returning evil for evil.

· The Divine Level: Returning good for evil.

Our natural response to hostility is retaliation.

Luke 9:53-55 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" 55 But he turned and rebuked them.

Jesus displayed love to His enemies.

Matthew 5:44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

Isaiah 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

Peter quotes from Psalm 34:12-16.

2. A Christian’s response to adversity is his or her greatest opportunity show the difference that Jesus makes in a person’s life!

1 Peter 3:13-17 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15 but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.

When we have enemies, we must remember God’s promise to be “for us!”

Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Hope in the midst of despair is the greatest argument for the authenticity of your faith!

Hope on display is a quality that is so distinct from the norm that it puzzles the watching world.

2 Timothy 4:14-18 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. ¹⁵Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. ¹⁶At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. May it not be charged against them! ¹⁷But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. ¹⁸The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

To live is to suffer. Suffer for doing something right!

The one sentence summary of your purpose: Jesus said to love GOD and love people.

Loving People is Deep Christianity.

Loving people is the toughest thing you will ever do.

1 Thessalonians 5:15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

God has shown us how to love others.

1 John 4:7-8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 4:19 We love because he first loved us.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8Love never ends. Loving God is the Ultimate Priority.

God wants our relationship with Him to remain current.

Learning to live in God’s love is like floating on water. With the water of growth opportunities all around us and God’s hands under us, He says in a calm voice, “Relax, I’m right here, I won’t let you down.” Then, in order for us to learn to float, He removes His hand from our backs, and we begin to struggle. And while we feel very alone and vulnerable—struggling and swallowing gallons of water—He all the while has His hands just inches below our backs, knowing all along He has control of our destiny and safety. It’s when we relax that we can enjoy the water and His presence. The secret to learning how to float is that we have to stop fighting the water and trust our instructor. Rich Mullins once wrote, “I’ve been in and out of all kinds of things—like self-deprecation, self-interest, ego trips, alcohol, and other addictions. I’ve failed many times to avoid those kinds of temptations. But that’s not what the devil was really interested in. What he was trying to do is make me feel apart from God.”

Worship

Psalm 96:1-4 Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! 2 Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! 4 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.

Worship has innumerable forms. The Moslem worships Allah in prayer by turning toward Mecca five times a day and repeating the same prayer. At some time in his life he makes a pilgrimage to Mecca where he will walk around the Kaaba seven times and kiss the sacred black stone. An American Indian may have worshiped by erecting a totem pole, offering up tobacco in the peace pipe, by sacrificing a finger joint or even a human being. All of us would probably be willing to acknowledge that these forms of worship are misguided and erroneous although those who follow these practices do so with great sincerity. Then, of course, there are the pagan forms of worship which we find within civilized America. There are those who worship the sun by taking off their clothes in nudist colonies. There are those who would have us understand that they find it much easier to worship God on the golf course or out on the lake or in the woods on Sunday morning. We should expect considerable confusion in this matter of worship.

2. Study

2 Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Committed Christians base their lives on the Bible. We believe that the Bible is God's Word and that it is therefore authoritative for us in matters of faith and practice. The Bible indicates great truths sharing who God is, how we can relate to him, and how we can understand ourselves and the world. In short, the Bible contains the words of life. Believers use it to guide them in discerning God's will, from the monumental to the mundane. We read it to gain hope as well as to glean truth. It affects our beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. In short, the Bible is our pipeline to heaven: without it, we are adrift, unprotected in a hostile place. One of the curious phenomena of recent times is how Christians have been using the Bible. Rather than recognize that it is a book made up of 66 books, each written to a specific people for a specific reason, we tend to wrench verses right out of their contexts because the words agree with what we already believe.

Part and parcel of this abuse of Scripture is laziness. That is, most people simply don't take the trouble to read the context or to do their homework on the meaning of the Bible. And even when they are confronted with overwhelming evidence that is contrary to their view, they often glibly reply, "That's just your interpretation." This kind of response sounds as if all interpretations are up for grabs, as though all interpretations are equally plausible. Such a view is patently false.

John 5:37-40 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen, 38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.

3. Serve

John 13:3-5 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Developing a lifestyle of service is something we have to do on purpose. It’s a proactive choice we have to make daily. But even though that kind of sacrificial serving is by definition a selfless act, it isn’t without its benefits. Perhaps this is especially true for singles.

Like most cultures, ours includes certain benchmarks that tell us where we stand in life. Two prominent rites of passage are marriage and parenthood. Married people — even young married people — are typically awarded adult status in our society. Likewise, parenting a child is typically viewed as a further step toward maturity and leadership.

Consequently, many singles often feel trapped in a perpetual state of adolescence. Lacking the benchmarks that tell us we’ve arrived at adulthood, we feel stuck in the waiting room of life, never quite growing up into mature Christian adults, hoping God will hurry up and send us a spouse so we can finally set foot in the real world of the living. All the while, we wonder why other adults don’t give us the respect we deserve. They treat us like overgrown teenagers, the not-quite-grownups who aren’t really ready to serve in positions of genuine leadership.

Developing a lifestyle of true Christian service breaks that cycle. Serving others changes your perspective – broadens it, really. The truth is that there are specific biblical guidelines for gauging your level of maturity in Christ, regardless of your cultural or marital status. And one of the most important benchmarks for Christian adulthood is the willingness to lay down your life in the service of others.

4. Share

Acts 1:8-11 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."

While some Christians are excited by the idea of evangelism, others break into hives at the mere mention of it. Most of us fall in between somewhere. We want to see the people around us – our friends, family members, co-workers – experience a relationship with Jesus, and we hope we can influence them in a way that sheds some light on the path that leads toward Him. Certainly, the kind of lives we lead speak volumes about what we believe, but when it comes to sharing the gospel, the biblical model is to show and tell, not one or the other. Be a friend. Evangelism isn’t “believer against unbeliever.” We aren’t called to be the conquering force that changes everyone’s minds. Rather we can join our friends on their journeys – we can come alongside them and investigate truth with them. Because the spirituality of a postmodern world tends to be vague and confusing, it’s important to give people time to sort spiritual matters through in their hearts and minds. We can be there to talk things out with them and to listen, rather than put pressure on ourselves to “save” them.

Be personal. Rather than getting tangled in theological, scientific, or historical debates with someone, simply share your story with her. Describe the context in which you became a Christian. Talk about what following Jesus looks like in your life, even what it feels like. What does it mean to you? What does He mean to you? No one can argue against your experience – it’s your experience, plain and simple.

An important aspect of communicating Jesus is learning to avoid “insider” language or condescension.

Book Review: Intercessory Prayer by Dutch Sheets

Sheets attempted a worthy goal in this book. The issues of prayer and spiritual warfare are “Required Study 101” to the church planter. The book was not from the student’s non-charismatic theological point of view in many regards. On the other hand, this book is unique in the ideas presented and in the ways those ideas are explained. Readers may certainly collect helpful concepts in each chapter. For example, in chapter 3 Christians were described as those who act on behalf of God as His appointed representatives.

Sheets explained that God does not automatically release His blessings if believers fail to engage Him for those blessings on behalf of themselves or others. Negative events may occur needlessly if Christians refrain from appropriate intercession. Likewise, the believer(s) should pray for the removal of obstacles to God’s blessings and divine accomplishments. For instance, the biblical prophets experienced great movements of God through engaging God and prayer. These movements, miracles and divine appointments were direct responses—in many cases—to prayer. Believers fail to receive great things from God when they exalt themselves, their plans, or human philosophies. Thus, prayer and spiritual engagement are the believer’s avenues for releasing God’s blessing.

According to Sheets, Satan desires to oppose God’s activity. Protection from Satan and his forces are not automatic. Christians are to be alert and actively resist Satan’s attempts to thwart God’s purpose and to harm believers. The believer is also responsible to warn and pray against the attacks of Satan.

The great hole in Sheets approach was his failure to engage the example of Jesus Christ in the Garden as He prayed, “Thy will be done.” Sheets had little to write about the mystery of God’s plan and sovereignty. Sheets wrote little to interface the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of all believers to intercede in prayer. Similarly, Sheets does not speak of praying in Jesus’ name as the practice of praying in the will of God. The New Testament reads, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us” (1 John 5:14). Without addressing this issue, new believers may become ill equipped to face the disappointments sometimes faced in prayer.

Sheets used a biblical word study approach to presenting his theology of prayer. Sheets was creative and cleaver in building his etymological basis for a theology of prayer. However, the reader still may ask, “Is that really what the original author intended?” Sheets case did seem like linguistic gymnastics. Nevertheless, many of the principles regarding prayer remained intact.

Sheets wrote the book in a conversational, sermonic tone. He included personal anecdotes and humor. Thus, the book was not meant to be an academic treatise. At points the quality of writing missed the mark. Nevertheless, Sheets conveyed his personal views on prayer. A grounded believer would be blessed and challenged to engage with the concepts written in this book. Read along with a quality book emphasizing the sovereignty of God, this book would serve as a counterbalance. Chapter nine of A.W. Pink’s work The Sovereignty of God is called God’s Sovereignty and Prayer. Pairing Sheets concepts with Pink’s would provide two sides of the coin. Overall, Sheets book is informative and helpful to church planters.

Book Review: Urban Impact by John Thompson

Thompson, who moved with his wife and children from a small town in Wisconsin, has lived and served in the city for 30 years. Thompson is the Pastor of Discipleship at Armitage Baptist Church, a multicultural church with many different ethnic groups, in Chicago, Illinois. He wrote to “produce a book that is both practical, with many real life illustrations, and at the same time include the academic information for classroom use.” Thompson achieved his objective. This book will be used for many years in colleges, seminaries, and other training centers by church planters and other ministers.

Thompson argued that half of the people in the world live in cities of at least one million people. Mission endeavors must probe into the heart of the world’s cities. Thompson indicated that more than 50 percent of new missionaries and pastors need to come to cities. Pastors, church planters, and missionaries need to master seven critical principles for ministry in highly populated areas. Reaching the disenfranchised and responding to the “absent father” were the first two critical matters addressed in the book.

Thompson established a policy with the employees at his Inner City Impact (Thompson’s first ministry responsibility in Chicago) ministry that required employees to live within a few blocks of the building. His goal was to provide an incarnational witness for Jesus Christ within the community. Commuting from the suburbs would undermine that approach. Thompson has maintained that incarnational approach in his current ministry role at Armitage Baptist Church. At Armitage, Thompson’s goal is to lead the church to disciple others by establishing and nurturing relationships with people in the community surrounding the church.

Thompson did not approach the difficult issues of living in the city blindly. He acknowledged that there are great challenges which accompany city ministry, especially for young families with children. Safe streets, good schools, and easy-going lifestyles are not part of normal city dwelling. Thus, ministers who sense a calling to the city were encouraged to remain in close connection with that divine mandate. Thompson asserted that God’s sovereignty in calling will provide the protection and direction needed for the family of the church planter.

Thompson challenged the reader regarding longevity in the ministry context. According to The Barna Group, the average pastor only stays five years in a church, even though the greatest ministry impact in a pastorate is in years five through fourteen. Thompson suggested that “stability” is one of the most valuable characteristics of a church located in a city. Cities are places of organizational and relational change. Divorce and unconventional family structures are the norm. Thus, stable churches with tenured leaders provide a needed sense of security to the neighborhood.

Paige Patterson—who contributed the foreword to the book—was correct in his assessment that the chapter on absentee fathers alone was worth the price of the book. Thompson raised important issues regarding the need for the church to address this issue. Thompson called this issue “the greatest problem in our society.” Thompson asserted that incarnational ministry with the intentional focus of breaking family cycles is the only hope for fundamental change within the city.

Overall, Thompson provided the reader with a well-written, documented, and personable look at incarnational ministry in the urban context. His personal commitment to the concepts of this book made reading it an inspiring endeavor. Perhaps, this work was the most effective book assigned

Book Review: The Nuts and Bolts of Church Planting by Aubrey Malphurs

Malphurs serves as Professor of Pastoral Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. Malphurs planted a church in Miami, Florida in the 1970s. Malphurs also wrote Planting Growing Churches (Baker Books). Malphurs attempted to provide a book which transcends a specific genre of church plant. He endeavored to bring principles applicable to any church planter in most situations. Current church planting books present models for the church planter to replicate. Malphurs bucked the trend and supplied the church planter with a timeless approach.

The book may not connect with the younger church planters—those in their twenties. Deconstructionalists or emergent church adherents may not appreciate the practicality and “cut and dried” approach to church planting. However, the observations are generally accepted and helpful. Ed Stetzer recommended the book on his blog in Spring of 2011.

Malphurs separated the book into two sections: preparation for church planting, and the process of church planting. He envisioned the church planting process as a fourfold event of presenting core values, mission, vision, and strategy. Likewise, Malphurs indicated that the church’s strategy must include five core components: community outreach, finances, setting, team building, and disciple making. In essence, Malphurs presented a church plant from start through early growth stages. At the close of the book, Malphurs included sixteen appendices which contained assessment tools and samples which may serve as a resource for church planters. This book may be one of the most comprehensive, accessible books available on the subject of church planting. The book also could provide inspiration for those seeking to revitalize an existing church.

Characteristic of Malphurs, the book emphasized the nature of the local church as a disciple-making entity. This concept occupied the driver’s seat in his ideal of creating a healthy church. In Appendix M entitled “Jesus’s Command to Make Disciples”, Malphurs outlined the disciple as a bi-part responsibility: evangelism/baptism and maturation through teaching. This information clarified the role of planter as a disciple-making evangelist.

A point of interest, Malphurs wrote in Appendix I concerning the role of church planter as one who grows a healthy church rather than becoming entrenched in a pastoral care-driven ministry. Malphurs identified dangers for church planters who may have compassionate inclinations. His writing identified the potential pitfalls of replacing visionary leadership with chaplaincy.

Malphurs wrote a great deal about finances and church planting. This was well done. Chapter fourteen may be the most practical chapter in the book from the standpoint of preaching. Malphurs gave an adequate theology of biblical stewardship which would easily convert to a preaching series.

Malphurs presented a simplified, solid look at the church planting process. His writing was interesting and practical. This book would be a “must read” for a core group. This book was written to help church planters answer the question, “How?” Likewise, the book is worth the price for the appendices alone. The following chapters stand out has highlights: Chapter three—“How Much Will it Cost? New Church Funding,” Chapter twelve—“Who Will Equip the Implementers? Building a Staff Team, and Chapter thirteen—“Where Will the New Church Locate? Establishing a Ministry Beachhead.” Malphurs created a church planting textbook which will be used for the next decade.

Book Review: Organic Church by Neil Cole

Cole examined the fundamental presentation of the church in the New Testament. He sought to relate the ideal for what is “relevant” to the ancient example of the first century believers. Thus, Cole envisioned a church without reliance upon buildings, professional ministers, and expensive marketing. The church, as Cole presented it, should be a ministry-driven community of faith that is actively reproducing itself through church planting.

Cole highlighted the troubled, declining churches of modernity. Churches have been clinging to an out-dated, overly business-like mode of practice. Cole redirected believers to consider an organic approach as represented in informal house-style churches which may meet in restaurants, public buildings, coffee shops, etc. Cole charged believers with the responsibility to plant churches among their affinity groups. Formal ministries with an inward, hierarchal approach are not necessary or effective.

Cole’s bent toward an “either/or” approach seemed unnecessary. Certainly, organic, fluid presentations of the Body of Christ are connected with the practices of the first Christians. In particular, Cole’s writing provides for an excellent philosophy of ministry for small discipleship groups within the context of a local church. However, his discounting of traditional churches approaches the realm of extreme. Traditional churches have become accustomed to doing things a certain way for good practical and biblical reasons. Furthermore, Cole did not seem to address the need for thorough leadership development before deploying for ministerial responsibilities.

Cole was fresh and unconventional in his approach. His passion for church multiplication and evangelism resonates from his writing. Yet, the reader may not be persuaded that small church plants respond to the majority in our culture today. These small venues are valuable for evangelism and discipleship. However, I believe it will be a long time—or maybe never—until the most successful church plants are house churches. Cole’s vision for small, simple churches addressed the issues of personal transformation. Small groups are excellent environments for accountability and quick multiplication. Organic churches are presented as conducive to being portable, transparent and inexpensive. Simple churches can be effective in reaching the lost because they are not focused on buildings and budgets. Thus, the modern church can learn from Cole’s model of a viral movement of the Christian faith that is not institutional, but is authentic.

Cole’s writing style was engaging. He integrated examples from popular culture and from Jesus’ parables to illuminate his principles. The book pointed out the “elephant in the room”: the modern Western church is failing to reach the lost and to disciple believers. Cole pointed the reader to go back to basics of the New Testament in evangelism and church planting. Certainly, the church can learn a lot from the business culture. However, Cole advocated a different approach by meeting needs and presenting the Gospel. Cole leads an organization called Church Multiplication Associates. Perhaps with current economic crisis, this group and others like it will be in high demand as church planters seek for an inexpensive, effective alternative to the modern church planting movement.

Book Review: No Perfect People Allowed by John Burke

(Books I've had on my desk that are good for church planters and church "revitalizers" out there.)

Burke, a former staff member at Willow Creek Community Church, gave the reader his personal experiences as founding pastor of Gateway Community Church in Austin, Texas. The Gateway Community Church website revealed that it is currently “one church with one mission that meets in several different places.” The church has been on the cutting edge in reaching out to the Post-Modern. Seventy-percent of the church of 3,000 is in their twenties and thirties.

Gateway Community Church has reached out successfully to skeptics and “sinners” of all backgrounds. The stories and suggestions in the book testified to Burke’s excellent skills in counseling and community ministries. Although the setting at Gateway Community church is unlike traditional church contexts, the principles are valuable for any context of ministry in the twenty-first century. The culture around (and within) the church today has embraced views different from previous generations on sex, alternative lifestyles, drugs, etc. Burke provided the reader with case studies in how Post-Moderns are being reached with the Gospel.

Burke presented a high standard for church leaders. To consider ministering on the level indicated in the book, the leader would need excellent personal skills, tremendous courage, forward-thinking visionary ability, and well-honed practical theology. Burke’s perspective is non-denominational and non-traditional. He has little room for hierarchal denominational politics. Likewise, his approach has little to offer to those who bow to what is politically correct within the traditional evangelical world. Burke reserved his sensitivities for those who are outsiders to the church.

Burke’s objective was “creating a culture of acceptance.” Burke presented the reader with a challenge to remove five barriers that loom between the church and the culture emerging today. These barriers were presented as “struggles” with trust, tolerance, truth, brokenness, and aloneness. Burke discussed these struggles in methods far beyond terms used in a sociology course. Burke recounted authentic stories of dysfunctional families and recovering addicts. The book highlighted the quest for truth piloted by people of all ages and backgrounds. Burke maintained that the core beliefs of the church need not be bent or altered in order to create a culture of acceptance.

Burke depicted the church as a place to serve as a family to all who come. The church is a family, not an organization. In this intimate context, people can respond appropriately to the transformative love of Jesus Christ as displayed in genuine community. This thinking is countercultural to the norm of many existing churches. Burke refrained from stereotyping people or homogenizing them into a sense of sameness. Burke valued the uniqueness of each broken person within his congregation. This type of acceptance would be valuable in a unique city like Austin, Texas.

A strong section of the book is chapters 7, 8 and 9. This section deals with the issues of homosexuality and religious tolerance. Burke emphasized the need for sound theology and reasoning that is paired with genuine compassion for people. These concepts are essential for evangelism to the Post-Modern, and for any generation or context. Overall, Burke’s case for creating a transforming, accepting environment was presented with experience, compassion, and courage.

Book Review: Global Church Planting by Craig Ott and Gene Wilson

Craig Ott is Associate Professor of Mission and Intercultural Studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. Gene Wilson is Church Planting Director for ReachGlobal, the International Mission of the Evangelical Free Church of America. Ott and Wilson provided one of the most extensive, detailed studies of the science and art of church planting. The book’s strength was displayed in the representations of church planting across the world. Their approach flowed from their biblical understanding of ecclesiology from the New Testament—particularly accounts in Acts. This ecclesiological viewpoint served as foundation for their definition of church planting: “Church planting is that ministry which through evangelism and discipleship establishes reproducing kingdom communities of believers in Jesus Christ who are committed to fulfilling biblical purposes under local spiritual leaders” (p. 8).

The authors demonstrated the creative differences in church planting in divergent cultures around the world. The nature of the book places it in the niche market of academicians of church planting. At just under 500 pages, core groups and laymen are unlikely to embrace the book as practical. On the other hand, the book was far from overly technical or dry. This “scientific” book has little to say about the often unpredictable and even chaotic nature of church planting.

The book was organized strategically. The prologue’s “Parable of the Apple Trees” was a creative beginning to the book. Ott and Wilson divided the book into four key sections: biblical foundations, strategic considerations, developmental phases, and critical factors. In section one, the theological/biblical material on church planting and missions was clear and well presented. The discussion of the church planting movements in section two brought important names and methods to light (e.g. house churches, church contextualization, indirect church plants, etc.). In section three, the authors outlined the progression of church plants. They addressed subjects such as identifying target audiences, setting apart leadership, launching the church, and organizing the ministry. Section three is the “meat” of the book. Section four dealt with the church planter in the context of developing a church planting team. Likewise, they pointed to important matters such as developing leaders and establishing partnerships. The appendix contains numerous serious and practical resources for the church planter.

The authors were helpful be presenting a comprehensive look at church planting. The book had many “take away” principles for any church planting context and few shortcomings which could be rectified by group discussions and experienced church planting coaches. Church planters cannot import and unpack a prefabricated method into a context which is divorced from the target audience. Likewise, Ott and Wilson indicated that church planting was a difficult spiritual, emotional, and relational endeavor which may not be accessible to some. The church planter’s spouse and family is a primary concern that could have been addressed with some case studies or data. In chapter two, the authors encouraged the church planter to look beyond areas where churches already exist when determining where to plant churches. Thus, the book maintained a natural bent toward pioneer church planting. This book balanced well with the other assigned book for this course, The Nuts and Bolts of Church Planting, written by Malphurs.

“False Ideas about Giving”

At North Valley your leaders are preparing for the 2012 financial ministry. Most of us have misconceptions about giving and generosity. I wanted to present some biblical truths to challenge you in your own giving. We all have growing to do in our generosity. Let God teach you!

Giving is a transformative discipline. Giving changes others. Giving changes you!

Money is not “the root of all evil.” (The love of money is.) Talking about money is approached with trepidation. We should not be afraid of the subject. The Prophets and Jesus Himself never had reservations about discussing tithing (giving a tenth of one’s income) or finances. Perhaps they were convinced that silence on the subject was more of a disservice than to speak openly about the matter.

Most people who have a “greed” problem have never had a “Gordon Gecko” moment. (Gecko is the greedy guy from the movie “Wall Street.”) People are selfish by nature. Greed is a problem in America today. Greed is a problem in the church today. Selfishness is a barrier to spiritual growth. It is one of the greatest barriers to God’s Kingdom work….perhaps the greatest barrier. We pump up our idea of what we say we “need” in order to satisfy our greed.

When greed is broken, lives are changed. Here are some examples from the Gospels…

A boy gives up his lunch…thousands are fed. A lady gives a container of ointment worth a year’s wages….Jesus is worshiped before His death on the cross. The God-man on a cross gives Himself over to brutality and death…Jesus pays your sin debt to a Righteous God.

In the New Testament, Paul encourages us with examples of giving. The Christians in Macedonia gave willingly and generously! You should too. Here is their legacy…

2 Corinthians 8:1-5 And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. 2 Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. 3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, 4 they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. 5 And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will.

Giving out of a sense of guilt is never ideal. Paul is asking other believers to change their desires….to give out of a sense of privilege. The Corinthian church was not contributing to the Kingdom as they should. Paul used the Macedonian church as an example to inspire their giving. They were examples in “the grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7). The Jerusalem church was in a bad economy…and scattered around the world. However, the Greek churches (such as Corinth) were in a better financial position. Still, they were not giving as they should give.

Sometimes we appease our own minds with false ideas about giving. It helps us come to terms with our own lack of generosity.

False Idea #1: Only those with extra money should give.

The Bible teaches that we all have a responsibility to give!

No one can take your place in stewardship. Some say that only those with lots of cash should give to God’s work. Let this person or that person give….they have lots of money. If I had money like they do, I would tithe. However, this is an unbiblical myth. The Macedonians gave out of extreme poverty.

What did the Macedonian church give? Did they give dividends or reserves? No. They gave out of poverty and great trial. The word “trial” is the word “purging”. It is the image of metal that is going through the fire so that the impurities could be removed.

When Jesus met the widow with her last two coins, he dispelled this myth. Many would have suggested that she keep the money. However, this widow was wise. Jesus said that she gave out of her lack…not out of wealth. She did not believe that only those with lots of money could contribute to God’s Kingdom work.

More resources will not make a person “more faithful.”

If I had a million dollars or won the lottery I would give to the Lord’s work! Well, if God cannot trust us in poverty…why would He trust us with riches?

False Idea #2: It hurts to give.

No it doesn’t! Really, it hurts when we are selfish.

Some believe it is painful to give. Many think it is more pleasant to keep things than to give them away. Others believe, on the other hand…that we should “give until it hurts.” Neither of these is accurate. We should give with an abundance of joy.

Jesus taught us: “It is more pleasant to give than to receive.”

Think about Christmas in your family. The one who is giving is often the most cheerful because he or she sees the joy on the face of the one opening the gift. Giving makes Christmas fun…it’s not the receiving.

It is wrong to say that it is unpleasant to give.

Those who live life as “givers” are the most happy people. Remember the story of the woman who poured the expensive ointment on the Lord’s feet? Jesus said, “She has done a beautiful thing.”

False Idea #3: Giving will subtract from my bottom line.

You can’t out-give God! If giving subtracts, it subtracts from our self-reliant, self-centered attitude.

Giving is not about taking a “slice of the pie.”

When you cut a delicious pie into pieces and begin to serve it…it will eventually be used up. (At least, that is what happens in my house!) However, in God’s economy, that is often not what happens. Giving does not necessarily lead to a lack of resources. Jesus said something different will happen….

Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

Some of the poorest people I know are the wealthiest in the things that matter. One day in Galilee a boy discovered God’s economy of giving. He took his lunch and gave it to Jesus and fed the crowds. This boy gave more than he really could “afford.” Yet, he abounded in riches.

So, it is not true that giving always results in a lack of resources.

False Idea #4:“I should just give what I can give. I can give a little extra here and there.”

2 Corinthians 8:3 For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.

Doing what you can do is a very boring and unspiritual thing to do. It takes the supernatural from the equation. Some people give this way: they add their bills and pay them, set money aside for what they want, then if they have any money left over, they give it to God. They say, “This is what I am able to do.” This person never benefits from God’s economy. This person accepts the false idea of “just do what you can.”

It is an amazing thing to be in the center of God’s activity. It’s amazing to watch God multiply

resources. David said it this way:

1 Chronicles 29:14b Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.

Many people are living today by false ideas that have been around for centuries. These false ideas rob us of what God longs for us to experience. Giving changes everything. Experience a transformation in your own life. Give!

Our leadership has recently researched the giving of this church over the years and discovered that the members of SRBC have given over a million dollars to spread the Gospel through the work of missions! History is linear. History is HIS story, a line leading to our completed redemption in Jesus Christ!

Paul deals with the problem of purpose in Romans chapter 8.

God created everything good. However, today creation is fallen.

Genesis 1:31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

We are in a difficult section of the story right now…

· Suffering

Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

· Vanity

Romans 8:20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope…

· Bondage

Romans 8:21 …that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

· Decay

· Pain

Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

Today we groan and wait for our adoption.

Today the Holy Spirit groans for us.

Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

HIS Story is our hope…

1. We never lose hope because we know God is at work in the world.

Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Acts 17:26-27 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us.

2. We are encouraged because we know God has a perfect plan.

Romans 8:29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Genesis 45:8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

3. All circumstances will work together in cooperation for the believer’s good.

Ephesians 1:4-5 Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.

2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 14 To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The primary way things work for our good is when we are conformed to be like Jesus and are appointed to reign with Him.

Providence is not an avalanche; it is a rolling river, rippling at the first like a rill down the sides of the mountain, followed by minor streams, till it rolls in the broad ocean of everlasting love, working for the good of the human race. Charles Spurgeon

The South Roebuck Community Church plant is growing and active. People are returning to God. Couples are finding a place to worship. Children are learning about Jesus in the South Roebuck Baptist Church Sunday School classes. Friendships are being born. A core group of members have begun important new member classes. Christians Think Differently

1. We believe that God exists uniquely above and beyond creation—He is not creation itself.

Psalm 19:1-2 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.

The enormity and complexity of creation reveals the size and detail of God’s purpose for us. God’s awesomeness is known everywhere.

· God created everything (from nothing) by the Word of His mouth.

Hebrews 1:3a He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

· God sustains all He has made.

· God has notified all people of His existence.

Romans 1:19-20 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

2. We believe God communicates with us through all He has made and by divine revelation.

When God redeems, He sends someone ahead to proclaim His word. God called upon Moses to speak to Pharaoh. God uses many means to reveal Himself. Fire communicates the holiness (untouchable nature) of God.

Exodus 3:1-5 Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, "I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned." 4 When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." 5 Then he said, "Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground."

Moses responded, “Here I am.” We are to respond to God’s call as Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Ananias, and Paul did.

When God shows up in power and glory, an ordinary piece of ground is transformed into “holy ground” by His divine presence.

3. We believe God desires to know us personally.

Exodus 3:6 And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

· God is good and just. Our ethics and practices are based upon this truth.

Exodus 3:7-9 Then the LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, 8 and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 9 And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

God is not aloof from people. He is a God of compassionate love. God’s willingness to deliver the people is a testament to His unfailing love. This culminates in the sending of Jesus to die on the Cross.

God promised to give His people a land spacious and bountiful—six nations could live there.

· God has a plan. History is a line pointing toward fulfillment.

Exodus 3:10-12 Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt." 11 But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" 12 He said, "But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain."

God has a plan. God is writing the story of His love. God promised Moses that He would personally accompany Moses in the journey—throughout Moses’ calling, God was always there.

History is HIS story.

Things are not always as they seem. Our circumstances may hide God’s activity. Our present suffering does not mean that God will not deliver us at the right time.

· God made us in His image.

Exodus 3:13-15 Then Moses said to God, "If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' what shall I say to them?" 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" 15 God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.

The name of God is a single Hebrew word from the verb “to be” which is translated as “I am who I am” or “I will be what I will be.” In the Hebrew, the name is only four consonants, transliterated into English as YHWH. In Hebrew, there were no vowels in the script. Thus, we are not certain how it was pronounced. William Tyndale translated this word as Jehovah in 1530. Many versions of the Bible use LORD (all capitals) to indicate this name. God disclosed his personal name to indicate that He is a personal God. The Living, Revealing God brought Himself low to reveal Himself to His people.

“I am truly he who exists and who will be dynamically present then and there in the situation to which I am sending you.” (Walter Kaiser, Jr.)

4. We believe that life is eternal and death can be the doorway to life with God and His people.

· People were made good, but are fallen.

Exodus 3:16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say to them, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, "I have observed you and what has been done to you in Egypt.”

· God desires for us to be restored.

Exodus 3:17 “And I promise that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, a land flowing with milk and honey."'

God takes the initiative in delivering His people.

· The work of Jesus Christ is the basis for our restoration.

John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

God is at Work

and minister to our communities. I commend you! As you take time to pray for your church this week, take a look at one of the ways our church is making a difference in our community.

The Valley Kids Consignment Sale was a useful and fun way to reach out to the surrounding community around North Valley Church. Many from the area brought clothes to be sold - and many came to shop! This was a excellent opportunity to service our community. People were able to clean out their closets and raise some funds for their family. The North Valley ELC, Children’s Ministry and Mission 18:16 benefited from the sale as well. Remaining items from the consignment sale were donated to the Lovelady Center in Birmingham. Thanks to all of the volunteers and staff that made this happen!

A Match Made in Heaven

Marriage in biblical times included a marriage feast. Weddings had several important components: 1) a contract was made 2) a year later the groom went to the bride’s family home and the bride was presented to him 3) then a nighttime procession was made from the bride’s home to the groom’s home 4) a large banquet was held at his house—lasting up to a week depending on finances

Marriage in Jesus’ Day: 1) Contract 2) Presentation 3) Procession 4) Banquet

In this story, two invitations were extended: a “save the date” type of invitation and a second invitation that called the people in to the banquet immediately.

Matthew 22:1-14 And again Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying, 2 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son, 3 and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding feast, but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, See, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding feast.' 5 But they paid no attention and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. 7 The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding feast is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.' 10 And those servants went out into the roads and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good. 1. You are invited to experience a banquet of eternal joy with Jesus Christ, the King of Kings.

1 John 1:3 That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

2. Do not let the demands of life distract you from Jesus Christ’s invitation to the banquet.

Philippians 3:8-10 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.

3. When we miss the feast, we miss the opportunity to fellowship with Jesus.

Revelation 19:5-9 And from the throne came a voice saying, "Praise our God, all you his servants, you who fear him, small and great." 6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; 8 it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure"— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9 And the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb." And he said to me, "These are the true words of God."

4. Jesus has extended an invitation of grace to all who live on the highways and side-roads of life. He, the Hospitable King, has offered to gather us around His table.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

Ezekiel 33:11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel?

Isaiah 55:1 "Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

5. We must prepare ourselves by wearing our wedding garments to the feast.

Ephesians 5:25-27 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

This is a call for God’s people to worship as God destroys Babylon. The victory of the Lord is celebrated with “the marriage of the Lamb.” This is the union of Jesus with His people. At some point after Jesus comes for His Church, we will be the Bride and honored guests at a great feast!

This great meal is a celebration of all that God has done. The theme of the event is “the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.”

The Devil will plot and scheme and his forces will fight, but God is on the throne walking among the lampstands.

We, the Church, were made to be the Bride of Christ. This is the essence of eternal life.

“His Bride had made herself ready.” How did this happen? We have done so by putting on the bridal clothes. These garments were given by the grace of Jesus Christ.

Monday: Pray for our Pastor's marriage and family life. Although no family is perfect, may his family continue to inspire others in the pursuit of a stable, loving home life.

Tuesday: Pray for unity in all of our church congregations (South Roebuck Baptist, North Valley, & South Roebuck Community) - individually & together as "one church, two locations, three congregations."

Wednesday: Ask God to help us to carry out our mission to connect people to God & build community with other believers.

Thursday: Pray that God will protect our church from people who teach untrue things about the Bible. Ask God to keep those away from our church who disrupt the spiritual unity in our church.

Friday: We ask God to provide every resource we need for ministry in our church. We need money to buy things that help us make a difference. We need the time and talents that people offer to facilitate ministries that make a difference.

Saturday: Pray that our church will find ways to shape our community in a positive way for Jesus. Pray that we will have special opportunities to present Jesus to the people around us.

Sunday: Pray that God would provide for the needs of our church Staff: spiritually, emotionally, physically, & financially. We need them to be strong so that they can succeed in strengthening the church.

The Real Jesus

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

The Church today needs a vision of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 1:9-11 I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos on account of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying, "Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea."

Jesus Christ met John in a vision on the first day of the week…the day on which believers gathered to worship and celebrate the Lord’s resurrection.

Ignatius and other early church fathers (Irenaeus) referred to Sunday as the Lord’s Day.

John was in exile for his faith. He was on the small island of Patmos in the Agean Sea. To John’s north-east, the churches of Asia needed a Word from God.

1. Jesus is standing among God’s people to guide, encourage, and discipline us.

Revelation 1:12-13a Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man…

2. Jesus is wearing the robe of purity and the sash of the royal priesthood.

Revelation 1:13b . . . clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.

Exodus 28:4 These are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a coat of checker work, a turban, and a sash. They shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons to serve me as priests.

Hebrews 2:17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

3. Jesus is the wisdom of the ages with dignity in his appearance.

Revelation 1:14a The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow.

Daniel 7:9 As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.

4. Jesus sees with complete omniscience, righteousness, and penetrating clarity.

Revelation 1:14b His eyes were like a flame of fire . . .

1 Corinthians 3:13 Each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.

Daniel 10:6 His body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude.

5. Jesus walks with assurance a path of victory.

Revelation 1:15a . . . His feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace . . .

1 Corinthians 15:25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

6. Jesus speaks with authority as the Way, Truth, and Life.

Revelation 1:15-16 . . . and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Matthew 17:2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

7. Jesus is the unchanging God who has power over life and death.

Revelation 1:17-18 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

Signs of the Age

Jesus gave four larger lessons in the Gospels called discourses.

The Four Discourses of Jesus:

1. The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) was about the principles of Kingdom living.

2. The Kingdom Discourse (Matthew 13) was about the growing Kingdom of God.

3. The Upper Room Discourse (John 13-17) was about the coming of the Holy Spirit to the Church.

4. The Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24-25), deals with future events and the Return of Jesus Christ.

Jesus (in Matthew 23) condemned the teaching of the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus walked out of Herod’s Temple (Matthew 24:1-2). When the disciples remarked about the awesomeness of the Temple and the buildings around it, Jesus began to speak about the last things. The Temple had been under construction since 20 BC. It was not actually completed until 64 AD. It was massive. The Temple was a source of great pride and gave a sense of permanence to the Jews.

Jesus saw things differently.

Only Jesus Christ and His plan are certain in this world.

Matthew 24:2 But he answered them, "You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down."

Only six years after the Temple was complete, the Romans took it apart stone by stone. What happened when the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD was to be a parallel of the end. "Josephus records that when the temple burned, a bright star resembling a sword stood over the city and that comets were visible for a year; Jewish War 6.5.1-3." The horrible things that happened in 70 AD mirror the end, but they pale in comparison.

The disciples knew that when Solomon’s Temple was destroyed it was a time of upheaval and captivity. They wanted to know what would happen next.

Matthew 24:3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?"

Some scholars believe that the words of Jesus here were completely fulfilled in 70 AD when Herod’s Temple and Jerusalem were besieged and destroyed. However, all of the things mentioned in Matthew 24 did not take place during the first century. Thus, it is speaking of the future also.

What Jesus says here is an accurate statement of end-time events leading up to the Second Coming.

The calling out of the Church, often called the Rapture, is not mentioned in this teaching. It is mentioned at a later time in John 14—and discussed in detail in 1 Thessalonians 4.

The time that will lead toward the Second Coming of Jesus begins with the calling out of the Church, then the rise of an evil leader who makes a covenant with Israel. The covenant is broken after 3 and ½ years and the final 3 ½ years leading up to the Second Coming is called Jacob’s Trouble.

The Second Coming of Christ begins His millennial reign of one thousand years, which is followed by the new heaven and the new earth.

These signs are general signs and are the beginning of sorrows. These things mark the progress of the age and grow in intensity and indicate that the end of the age is coming.

Matthew 24:4-14 deals with the time in which we are living. Matthew 24:15-25 addresses the Great Tribulation.

Nine Signs of the Age

Luke 21:10-12 Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name’s sake.”

1. False Christs

Matthew 24:4-5 And Jesus answered them, "See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray.

2. Wars and Rumors of Wars

Matthew 24:6-7 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

3. Famines

Matthew 24:7 and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

4. Pestilence

5. Earthquakes

The Bible tells us that the greatest earthquake of all time will occur just before the Second Coming of Jesus.

Revelation 16:18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, and a great earthquake such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake.

6. Many Martyrs

Matthew 24:8-10 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. 9 "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another.

More martyrs have died in this century than in the first century.

7. False Prophets

Matthew 24:11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.

8. Increasing Evil

Matthew 24:12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold.

9. Worldwide Preaching of the Gospel of the Kingdom

Matthew 24:13-14 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Matthew 24:27-31 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. 29 "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

You Hold the Key for the Next Generation

A generation ago in America, most families lived close together. In small towns, rural communities, or in neighborhoods children were around their grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

I grew up in a small town. I lived within a short drive of almost all of my extended family members.

We shared common interests and circles of friends. Our families worked in the same stores and coal mines. Being close to family provided me with a large support - group to nurture me as I grew.

Today, more families are scattered. Jobs, finances, educational pursuits, and divorce are just a few reasons why people are more mobile.

Being separated from family has redefined “family” for many. Children are missing the extended family layer in their lives.

This is where the church can make a tremendous difference. As children of our mobile society are separated from important moral and spiritual influences in their family, the attendees of the churches in our communities must be ready to stand in the gap.

Children are a gift from God. They need to be taught how to live with integrity and in obedience to God.

George Barna said, “We spend roughly 68 times more money per capita on caring for the average felon than on a church’s ministry to a spiritually hungry child.” Perhaps, if the churches of America would come alongside of parents to help them in the critical role of childrearing, there would be fewer spiritually starving children and fewer felons!

Kids need another voice in their lives saying the same things as their parents. For example, a mother can tells her daughter to dress with modesty a thousand times, yet it seems to “click” when someone younger and “cooler” (like a volunteer in the church’s student ministry) tells her the same thing. A dad lectures his son to be punctual and responsible and it falls on deaf ears—until a Sunday School teacher or coach reinforces the principle. The church family can make a positive impression on a child’s life by being “another voice.”

Perhaps God is leading you to be “another voice” in the life of a child. During this time of year many churches are preparing for a fresh start in their child and youth ministries.

Pastors and leaders are seeking volunteers and support for various programs. Now, more than at any other time in recent history, it is important to be involved in reaching the next generation.

Will you step up and give of your time and resources through your local church? Will you become the extended family of children in your community?

As a pastor, I have spent much of my adult life moving around. My children do not have the blessing of living down the street from their aunts and uncles. However, our church family has served as grandparents, aunts, and uncles to my three children.

I see how they enrich my family by investing into the lives our children. I do not understand why any parent would not want that kind of support for their children.

One 90-year-old gentleman at the Birmingham location of our church has been honored by my children with the title “Pee Paw.” I am not sure where they came up with that name. However, Pee Paw is mentioned in every nighttime prayer by at least one of my children.

Also, my kids talk about Mr. Brock and Mrs. Barbara and numerous other volunteers in the children’s ministry. To hear my children talk, these are the wisest, most amazing people on the planet.

It is my hope that you will join the ranks of selfless, giving people like these. Be a constant in the changing world of our children. You are what kids need!

Spiritual Disciplines and the Disciple, Part 1

Spirituality, is a decision. It does not happen without any effort.

The book of Second Peter is Peter’s last voice to the churches of the ages before he goes home to live with Jesus. His final message was “grow up.” (2 Peter 3:18) It seems that the believers who received this letter were not connecting salvation with life. Peter emphasized the need to put away the old self.

2 Peter 1:3-4 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

2 Peter 1:5-8 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Peter’s seven marks of a true disciple (from 2 Peter 1:5-8)…

My kids are in a hurry to grow up. Yet, they do not like getting rest, taking vitamins or eating healthy food as much as we would like for them to. Sometimes, we can be more concerned about growth and the opportunities growth brings than about getting the necessary ingredients into our lives which help us to grow.

1. Faith. Faith is the beginning of discipleship. It is the foundation of the Christian Life.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

To his faith, as a foundation, the believer needs to add six qualities.

2. Virtue. Virtue is moral power exercised through principled living. We cannot be virtuous in our own strength. We can live virtuous lives by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. If we do not add ‘virtue’ to our faith, our faith will become what James called ‘dead faith.’

James 2:14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?

James 2:26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

3. Knowledge. Knowledge is learning and living out God’s truth. However, knowledge is more than information, it is a personal relationship.

John 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

In 1937, Dietrich Bonhoeffer mentioned in his book “The Cost of Discipleship” that discipleship costs us the things usually desired in this life. However, he affirmed, the cost of not being a disciple is far greater: It costs us peace, love, and a faith that sees God working our circumstances together for good.

4. Self-Control. Self-Control is mastering your emotions instead of being mastered by them. How do you develop this important discipline?

Self-control is a spiritual discipline that must be developed comprehensively, not just in a problem area.

Develop self-control through solitude, fasting, frugality, and sacrifice.

All great men and women of faith have practiced pulling away from others at times to get before God in a quiet place.

5. Steadfastness. Steadfastness is the willingness to keep going strong when the good “feeling” is gone.

James 1:3 For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

The Greek word (hypomonen) literally means to remain under something, such as a heavy load.

Discipleship in the days of the Twelve was different. It had a clear meaning—give your life to serve Jesus in a literal sense. However, today it is seems different. We do not walk, serve, eat, sit and talk with Jesus physically as Peter, Andrew, James and John did. However, in the true disciple, there is a willingness and passion to live and die for the Master. That desire comes with a willingness to rearrange our lives to put Jesus in the center—with a focus to glorify Him.

6. Godliness. Godliness is living in constant awareness of God’s presence.

7. Brotherly affection. Brotherly affection (Gr. philadelphia) is living in close community with God’s people.

1 Peter 1:22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.

1 Corinthians 13:13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Everyone needs a leader to which he or she submits; this is important to our growth in service, humility and love.

As we practice brotherly affection, it is important that we submit to authority. It helps us to understand humility and servanthood. Worship and service in the body of Christ is a place to exercise this important characteristic.

Remember, Christianity isn’t a religion – it is a relationship.

Our next Theology Café will address this important question. Many people in our modern world do not believe that the Scriptures are reliable or trustworthy. My story: As a music major in college—this was before I had realized my calling to be a pastor—I went to the academic dean and asked (begged) him if I could substitute Biblical Greek for some of my routine course work. Why? I had a passion for God’s Word. Well, he thought I was nuts, but let me change my course schedule. Now, as a pastor, I consider the two years of undergraduate Greek with Dr. David Farnell (who now serves at Master’s Seminary in California) as the most important years of my preparation. He taught us to understand the Greek language and how the Bible came to us. I went on to seminary and did my master’s work in biblical languages. I was in the first graduating class of biblical language specialists in my seminary. My heart beats for helping Christians understand that the Book they read and cherish is authoritative, accurate, and powerful.

Multi-Culturalism and the Christian Church

I do not have anything to say regarding the current immigration matters and Alabama law. However, as a Christian leader, I have looked into matters of race, culture and ethnicity from the biblical perspective. Over the years, I have developed certain core values regarding race and culture.

We live in a society that is multi-cultural. If we believe God is not big enough to help the Body of Christ deal with that, then we have misunderstood basic theology. Overcoming racial and cultural biases for the sake of the Gospel is our duty.

Racism is a spiritual problem. It rears its ugly head in many situations. For instance, why does the best man or woman for the job always look like us? Fear and misunderstanding drive us to stay in our comfort corner. Jesus taught us to pray for things to be "on earth as it is in Heaven." Heaven is going to be a place of many tribes and tongues.

Jesus wants us to be one. Read John 17:20-23. Some people say that will never happen. Well, those who say that have not read the Bible. In Acts 11:19-26 and Acts 13:1-3 we have a description of the church at Antioch. Antioch was a catalyst for the rise of Christianity in the New Testament era. I find it compelling that the leaders of the church of Antioch were from all over the map. Obviously, there was a mix of language, skin color, and cultural ideas.

Reconciling people to God is a product that we look for in sharing the Gospel. Our primary concern is not overturning centuries of cultural bigotry and misunderstanding. However, in each believer's sanctification, God begins a work of reconciling people to each other. The Church must join the Holy Spirit in this work.

I have noticed that many look at the diversity in politics and the entertainment industry (sports, music, movies, etc.) as a motivation to seek a change in attitudes toward other cultures. Some see the changes in their own neighborhoods as a primary reason to understand other people. Yet, these are inferior motives. The GOSPEL is the fitting motivation to love people.

Today, 92.5 % of churches in the United States are mono racial. This means that 80% of the congregation are of one ethnic group. Surprisingly, this is a dramatic improvement from just 10 years ago. Will this change in my lifetime? I believe it will. However, as it changes, my desire is that it changes because of the Gospel. It would be a tragedy if we let the world shame the church into loving all cultures and peoples--instead of making positive changes because of passion for following Jesus.

Learn to Trust God's Perfect Peace

The recent storms have given us a reminder of how quickly peace can be lost. As we live in this fallen world we face unfortunate tragedies. Our hearts and lives can be impacted in the blink of an eye.

Yet, in the midst of challenge, God has promised to provide a peace that transcends our circumstances. God’s Word says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock” (Isaiah 26:3-4).

God’s promise to provide perfect peace is a solid rock to which we cling in chaotic times. Isaiah’s actual words in the Hebrew language are “You keep him in shalom, shalom (peace, peace).”

I find it interesting that God promises to give us more than peace. God promises double peace—perfect peace. These words have a quality of comfort that transcends the letters on the page.

This promise has a benefit that comes with strong demands. If we meet certain criteria, then we can reap the benefits of the promises here. The requirements Isaiah identified are two-fold: Our minds must be “stayed”—or focused—upon God and our hearts must “trust” God.

“Trust” in the Hebrew Scriptures is synonymous with “faith” in the New Testament. The literal meaning of “trust” is to “lean upon.”

“Reliance” is a good word. Like an elderly gentleman who leans on his walker because he cannot support himself in his weakness.

We often stumble and fall because we do not realize our weaknesses. Leaning on God means acknowledging that we cannot make it on our own. Being “reliant” or “leaning” on Someone (God)—this is to be blessed.

It seems that being self-reliant would be a blessing, but it is not good or even possible. Self-sufficiency would mean that you can handle everything without any help. I don’t know anyone like that—really. Usually, an attitude of self-sufficiency is just a cover-up for fear.

“Perfect peace”—shalom, shalom—comes only through trust. A person’s mind that is focused consistently on God finds the deepest sense of peace.

Trust makes you consistently steady. Many are blown to and fro by circumstances—living from one religious experience to another—having little or no stability. People who are lacking trust in God are relying on personal experiences or circumstances in order to find peace. Thus, peace is elusive.

The Bible reminds us to pray when we are tempted to worry. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Through prayer we focus our minds upon God and express our trust in Him. Only then can we experience “shalom, shalom”—God’s perfect peace.

Remember, the key is acknowledging that self-reliance does not work. On the other hand, coming humbly to Jesus Christ and casting your cares upon Him works every time.

Reconciliation

Philemon is the shortest of Paul’s letters. This is one of only five books in the Bible with one chapter Philemon has eleven names in the book and has a broad message of reconciliation originally written to the church at Colossae, meaning it is to be read by more than Philemon. It is one of the five one chapter books of the Bible. This one has a special story that helps us understand radical reconciliation.

Philemon 17-22 So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me. 18If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—to say nothing of your owing me even your own self. 20Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ. 21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 At the same time, prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that through your prayers I will be graciously given to you. 23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends greetings to you, 24and so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my fellow workers. 25 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Believers are called to a ministry of reconciliation.

2 Corinthians 5:18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

Galatians 6:1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.

Paul teaches us how to do this. Paul providentially knew Philemon. Could you imagine how Onesimus must have felt when Paul told him that he had led his former master to Christ? This was an act of a sovereign God.

1. Paul discovers a problem.

Paul wins a runaway slave to Christ. As many as one third of the Roman empire was in slavery. Slavery was not an institution based upon skin color or race at this time. Slavery crossed all barriers. A slave was subject to the master. The runaway slave could be killed by the master.

Paul was not afraid to confront the evils of society. His wants to deal with slavery by calling on Christians to deal with others in love. Nothing in the Bible ordains or sanctions slavery. Slavery is evidence of the human condition of depravity.

Philemon 10-12 I appeal to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I became in my imprisonment. 11(Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful to you and to me.) 12I am sending him back to you, sending my very heart.

2. Paul draws attention to the problem by involving the Body of Christ.

Could you imagine how Philemon must have felt when he received this public letter with eleven names in it? This was a public issue. Paul wanted to make Philemon understand that this was a public matter that impacted the Body of Christ.

The idea of the house church is important here. There were no church buildings until the third century. There are eight references in the New Testament to churches meeting in homes.

Philemon 13-16 I would have been glad to keep him with me, in order that he might serve me on your behalf during my imprisonment for the gospel, 14but I preferred to do nothing without your consent in order that your goodness might not be by compulsion but of your own accord. 15For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, 16 no longer as a slave but more than a slave, as a beloved brother—especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.

3. Paul offers a solution to the problem. Use the right word at the right time to the right person.

Jesus said it this way…

Matthew 18:15 "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.”

Paul uses forceful tact to deal with this situation. Paul was a spiritual, psychological genius. Paul identified himself as a prisoner (five times in this book). This evokes the compassion of Philemon toward Onesimus. Paul identifies Philemon and his family as fellow workers. Philemon is probably angry and bitter. Yet, Paul commends his love for the saints…and then unveils that Onesimus is now a saint also. Paul even identifies Onesimus as his son. Perhaps Onesimus was present at the reading of this letter.

From bondage to brotherhood is the theme. Paul, writing from Rome during his first imprisonment, asks Philemon (his wife is probably Apphia—identified in church tradition as a martyr of the faith) to take back Onesimus—a runaway slave converted by Paul—as a brother, not as a slave. Paul asks him to do this unconditionally.

Paul said that he would personally take care of any debts that Onesimus owed.

Philemon 18-19 If he has wronged you at all, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. 19 I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it—to say nothing of your owing me even your own self.

Onesimus ran to Rome, possibly with money from Philemon, thinking he would get away from his problems.

4. Paul insists that the problem be addressed and that reconciliation take place.

Philemon 17 So if you consider me your partner, receive him as you would receive me.

Paul’s command is as follows…

• Receive Onesimus.

Onesimus placed his life on the line to make things right. Of course he did not want to be a slave. Most sane people would not have wanted to obey Paul and be reconciled to a master. Yet, Onesimus trusted his spiritual leader. Paul exuded Godly wisdom. Paul was confident that a genuine believer would do the right thing—with regards to Philemon.

• Reckon his expenses to my account.

• Refresh my heart (my innermost being)…with your actions.

Philemon 20 Yes, brother, I want some benefit from you in the Lord. Refresh my heart in Christ.

What good are friends if you cannot use them?

Church tradition states that Onesimus was a prominent pastor in Asia Minor. Also, some sources state that Onesimus was a part of the gathering of Paul’s writings. It is assumed that Philemon handled this with humility and compassion…otherwise this book would not have been in the New Testament.

This story presents the Gospel by way of analogy. We were all runaways—sinners running from God. Someone on our behalf has pleaded our case—putting our sin to their account (Jesus). We can be restored. We are slaves becoming adopted as brothers—even more so—adopted as Sons of God.

The Cross and the Gospel must guide every step in reconciling people to God and to each other.

Living for Christ in These Last Days

My recent article in the St. Clair Times. I wrote it long before the crazy rapture predictions made the recent headlines. Enjoy!

Many seasoned preachers and spiritual leaders seem to believe we are living in the “last days.”

As health conditions and technology trends go up, it seems that morality is going down. Family units are disintegrating and spiritual conditions are worsening. Are we living in the last days?

The Bible teaches that in the latter times — in this final stage of human history as we know it — bad things will happen. The “last days” or “latter times” refer to the time between Christ’s ascension into Heaven after his Resurrection and before His future return. We have been living in the latter times from the days of the early church until today.

The Bible makes it clear that “some will abandon the faith” (1 Timothy 4:1). Certainly, this is true.

The entire continent of Europe is facing a crisis of faith with regards to Christianity. In England and Germany, remarkable church buildings are being converted into coffee houses, thrift shops and office complexes. Here in the United States, many researchers identify the fastest growing religious group as those who are “nonaffiliated.”

The impact of evil in the last days seems to be at more intense levels today. Sometimes we think of the “last days” as a short period of time just before the return of Christ.

However, for centuries we have seen evil ebb and flow with an upward trend. Evil does not always present itself in terms of illegal drugs, crime, genocide and oppressive politics.

I do not believe that the Bible was envisioning satanic worship or marginal cults when it spoke of the rise of evil in the last days. Often evil originates in boardrooms, universities, churches and white-collar neighborhoods. Evil is the deterioration of those things which are sacred, such as honor, integrity, love and justice.

So, if the days are becoming more evil, what should we do? Should we throw our hands up and say, “We cannot make a difference. We should not even try.”

On the contrary, God’s choicest servants shine brightest when things are at their darkest. Perseverance and faithfulness is essential when things are difficult. Your small influence may be used by God to bring hope and deliverance to someone who is struggling with temptation and trials.

In the last days, those who believe in the return of Jesus Christ have two important jobs.

First, we must be watching and waiting for Jesus Christ. We look with eager anticipation to the eastern sky. We know that Jesus could come at any moment! How exciting!

Second, faithful Christians must be salt and light (Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount) to an evil generation in need of transformation and purpose. Wherever we go, we must share the good news that Jesus Christ offers forgiveness to all who will believe.

So, we live in the last days. We want Jesus Christ to come back and right all wrongs. We long for a better place — beyond all of the troubles and concerns of this world. We envision a place with no cancer, wheelchairs, addictions, abuse or pain.

However, while we are here in this old world, we are here to make a positive difference.

Resources I Recommend to Every Christian

When I got serious about growing in my faith, I needed help. I sought out the best to get me started. Let me share some of these proven resources to help you and your family grow in your faith. Before I get into the books, I want to remind you that the internet is a great place to find information to help you. I suggest three sites: http://www.bible.org/ (for great Bible study materials from a conservative point of view), http://www.biblegateway.org/ (read any version of the Bible you wish and cross reference passages--I use it every day), and http://www.wikipedia.org/ (be aware that differing biases are represented--liberal and conservative--yet, you can look up any Bible book, term, personality, or theological idea).

1. You need a Bible dictionary. I recommend "Nelson's Illustrated Bible Dictionary." Nelson's contains all of the key people, places, and concepts of the Bible. You can look up ancient cities and customs. For example, you want more information on Old Testament feasts and sacrifices or you want to know what an "alabaster box" was...its all listed alphabetically.

2. You need a basic book on your beliefs. I recommend "Basic Theology" by Charles C. Ryrie. I actually met Charles Ryrie and found him to be very warm and friendly. Ryrie has a knack for telling you deep theological truths in a very plainspoken way. I have referred to this book literally hundreds of times. You want to know the views on the Second Coming? You want to know the different views of the atonement of Christ? Interested in angels and demons? Ryrie gives you the scoop, but does not dive so deep that you lose air.

3. You need a good study Bible. I recommend "Nelson's Study Bible." The chief editor was Earl Radmacher. I met him too--boy, can he teach. He has assembled the very best study bible available today. It has commentary at the bottom of the pages of the Scripture to help you understand what you are reading in "real time." He has strategically placed definitions, maps and church history information throughout the pages.  The Bible is thick. It is not your church Bible--probably. Yet, it is a great--I mean GREAT--study Bible.

4. You need a good set of maps. I recommend "The Westminster Historical Atlas of the Bible." It has the stuff you need to understand the Holy Land and the surrounding areas. Do not gloss over the geography of the Bible. If you skip the geography, you often miss the meaning of the passages you are reading.

5. You need a good set of basic commentaries. I recommend two sets. First, "The Bible Exposition Commentary" set by Warren Wiersbe. I met Wiersbe too. Wiersbe is rich and personal in print--much better writer than speaker (great at both). He is not overly technical, but detailed enough. He gives great spiritual application. You can also buy Weirsbe's commentaries individually--called the "BE Series." I also LOVE the "Thru the Bible" set with Dr. J. Vernon McGee. McGee has a podcast/radio program that has carried on after his death in the late 1980s. His notes and lectures are carried on through this fun-to-read look at the Old and New Testaments.

6.You need a good translation of the Bible. I am satisfied with the ESV. This translation is highly praised by reputable scholars. You will be able to understand it much better--particularly if you grew up on the KJV (Also known as the Authorized Version). Buy a good Bible that will last you a lifetime. I suggest the Cambridge ESV wide-margin in leather.  You will pay double for a Cambridge University Bible, but it will last you the rest of your life. This brings me to my final suggestion...

7. You need a "wide-margin Bible." This is great to take to church, Bible studies, or to use when reading at home. With a fine point pen or pencil, you can make notes in the margins. The wide margins serve as a place to keep written blessings that God brings to your attention.  Your own notes will encourage you for years to come. I have one that I have used for several years--packed with hand-written notes. You need one that is well made and opens flat.

One more suggestion: Get on itunes and subscribe to some great preaching and Bible teaching. I have enjoyed the podcasts of seminary chapel services from conservative seminaries (they usually have the "best" biblical preachers). Many have been helped by "The Theology Program." This is a set of theology classes designed to help everyday Christians get a basic theological education. Finally, try Thru the Bible with Dr. J. Vernon McGee. In five years, you will listen through a discussion of virtually every chapter of the Bible (pardon his twangy voice and corny sense of humor).

These suggestions are for starting out. You may outgrow some of this and move on. However, you would do well if you stayed with most of these resources your entire journey.

Now, go and grow.

Faithful to Serve

As you know, we have called Jerome Bell, a NAMB church planter, to partner with us at South Roebuck Baptist Church to plant a new work. Jerome is one of the most talented preachers in the African-American community. I have attached a link to a short article from The Alabama Baptist that explains our vision to continue a strong ministry in the South Roebuck community. Our church believes it has a personal responsibility to continue reaching people in our area.

Although the church plant has many needs, our primary need is prayer. Will you pray with us? Pray for our existing church ministry and this new endeavor to accomplish the Great Commission in our changing community. Pray for Jerome to continue to manifest the unique skills of preaching, evangelizing, and leading in our specific context. Speaking from the Heart

Jesus, in Luke’s Gospel, preaches a shortened version of the “Sermon on the Mount” on a level piece of ground where people sat and listened. Jesus prayed all night. Then, Jesus chose His disciples. This is Jesus’ sermon with the whole team. His words were powerful. He talked to them about the “Beatitudes.” He judged selfish materialism. Jesus spoke on avoiding harsh judgmentalism. Jesus concludes His sermon by saying that the house that is built on the rock will stand. The house that is built on the sand will fall. Interestingly, before His powerful concluding summary, Jesus taught on the power of what we say to others—and how our words flow from our hearts.

One smart man said that “Jesus promised His disciples that three things—that they would be completely fearless, absurdly happy and in constant trouble” (F.R. Maltby).

1. Our words resemble their source.

Luke 6:43 "For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit.”

Our fruit is always true to character. An apple tree produces apples, not pears. A righteous person produces good fruit, not evil fruit. A tree that is withered and infested will not produce healthy fruit. Believers are not known by sin and rebellion. Believers are known for bringing glory to God with their lives.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Luke 6:44 “For each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.”

2. What is within us will find its way out of us.

Luke 6:45 “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

(Also in Matthew 12:34ff)

The heart of a person is like a bank account. You can only withdraw what is in the account. There is no other way to understand a person and form an opinion about them than by watching and listening. Fine words will never take the place of fine deeds. Yet, authentic words of peace flow from someone who has met the Prince of Peace. We have to hold standards and be “fruit inspectors.”

No person can speak of God with His mouth—with authority and assertiveness—unless God’s Spirit lives within that person. Our words show the condition of our hearts. Believers who talk freely and say the first thing that comes into the mind should speak of Jesus. Always, our speech betrays us; it gives us away. When men are natural, heart and mouth act in concert.

(John MacArthur) “The pe r son who harbors ill will against someone will eventually express those feelings. The person who is filled with lustful thoughts will eventually express those thoughts in crude or suggestive remarks. The person who is persistently angry and hateful will sooner or later put those feelings into words. In the same way, the person who is genuinely loving, kind, and considerate cannot help expressing those feelings in words as well as actions.”

Important truths about our speech…

· God knows and will reveal what we say in secret.

Luke 12:1-3 In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 3Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

· If you can’t say anything helpful, don’t say anything at all. Some things are better left unsaid. Don’t couch your gossip in a prayer request.

Psalm 137:6 Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy!

· Your words are an accurate measure of your spiritual growth.

James 1:26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

· Your mouth can cause immeasurable destruction.

James 3:5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!

The Protection of God

We often stumble and fall because we do not realize our weaknesses. Leaning on God means acknowledging that we cannot make it on our own. Being “reliant” or “leaning” on Someone (God)—this is to be blessed. It seems that being self-reliant would be a blessing, but it isn’t.

2. Trusting God is not being self-sufficient.

Self-sufficiency would mean that you can handle everything without any help. I don’t know anyone like that—really. Usually, an attitude of self-sufficiency is just a cover-up for fear.

“Perfect peace” comes only through trust. A person’s mind that is focused consistently on God finds the deepest peace—“perfect peace.” In the original Hebrew, it simply says “shalom, shalom”—translated “perfect peace.” Trust makes you consistently steady. Many are blown to and fro by circumstances—living spiritual paycheck to spiritual paycheck—having no stability. People who are lacking trust in God are relying on personal experiences or circumstances in order to find peace. Thus, peace is elusive.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

3. Peace is the end of strife; it is a sense of completeness.

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Notice that we are promised “the peace of God” in verse 7. In verse 9, we are promised the “God of peace.” Peace does not come from a religious experience. Peace comes from God Himself.

Colossians 3:1-2 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Day Seven of: "7 Words That Will Change Your Life"

The Seventh Word

"Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." Luke 23:46

This great truth gives assurance to believers today. After Jesus breathed His last breath on the Cross, He went to Paradise with God the Father. Jesus told the humble thief hanging next to Him, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.”

I know this will encourage you: Christian, when you breathe your last breath in this life—you too will experience Paradise. Your spirit will also be in the Father’s hands! God’s Word teaches us that to be away from the body is to be in God’s presence in Heaven (2 Corinthians 5:8).

For his first sermon in an elementary preaching class, Lawrence, an African student, chose a text describing the joys we’ll share when Christ returns and ushers us to our heavenly home. “I’ve been in the United States for several months now,” he began. “I’ve seen the great wealth that is here—the fine homes and cars and clothes. I’ve listened to many sermons in churches here, too. But I’ve yet to hear one sermon about Heaven. Because everyone has so much in this country, no one preaches about Heaven. People here don’t seem to need it. In my country most people have very little, so we preach on heaven all the time. We know how much we need it.” Men of Integrity, Vol. 4, No. 1.

We have probably heard Heaven described as a “better” place. To believe in Heaven is not to run away from life; it is to run toward it.

Here are a few truths about Heaven . . .
1. Heaven is a place of new beginnings.
2. Heaven is a place of joyful service.
3. Heaven is a place of awesome worship.
3. Heaven is a place of unspeakable beauty.
4. Heaven is a place where all pain and trouble is taken away.

Here is my favorite description of Heaven in the Bible . . .
Revelation 21:24, 26 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Unfortunately, only when we are under extreme suffering or have a loss of hope in life do we think seriously about Heaven.

During the three days between Jesus’ death on the Cross and His amazing Resurrection, He visited Paradise. Yet, after rising and spending forty days on the earth as the Risen Jesus—He ascended into Heaven to prepare a place for us. One day, unless Jesus returns for us during our lifetime, we will commit our spirit into the Father’s hands in death. Be thankful that God has created an amazing place for us!

Dear Lord, one day I will commit my spirit into your hands. Even though I will miss the wonderful people and gifts of living in this world, I look forward to what you have created for me in Heaven. Also, I look forward to a new body, a new Heaven and a new earth! Amen.

The Sixth Word

“It is finished.” John 19:30

What if 2,000 years ago the headline had been written “Messiah Crucified”? —That would have been the ultimate oxymoron to the Jews of the day. It would have been in comic strips, not on the front page! The Messiah was to have been a triumphant warrior. He was to come to destroy the Romans
and to give the land back to the Jews.

How could the Messiah be crucified? “The wages of sin is death,” God’s Word says. A perfect sacrifice had to be made to pay for our sin. God, before the foundation of the world, chose the Cross for Jesus. The torturous death of crucifixion was first practiced by the Persians—it would become the destinyof Creator and Eternal God in the flesh.

Alexander the Great brought crucifixion to the Mediterranean world to intimidate the people. The Romans learned to do it well. Yet for Jesus, the torture began before He ever saw two boards and three nails. Jesus’ pain began in Gethsemane and continued throughout His unjust trial. Jesus, weak
and with His skin peeled from His body, was draped with a robe to signify his claim as “king.” He was forced to hold a stick as scepter. Then a bundle of thorns, commonly used for firewood, was pressed down upon His head. Jesus was mocked again by the Romans, as He was by the Jews. Then, the
hateful soldiers tore the robe off his back like an adhesive bandage off of a fresh wound. Then Jesus was to taken down the Via Dolorosa (the Way of the Cross).

If you had been there, what might you have seen? The upright post of the cross—the vertical beam—was usually fixed in the ground permanently. The convicted man would carry the horizontal beam, which weighed approximately 110 pounds. For Jesus, the journey would be to carry this object for six
and one-half football fields after being brought to the edge of death by whipping. Roman historical accounts affirm that when the convict reached the destination, he would be impaled to the horizontal beam through the small bones of the wrists, thus supporting the weight of the human body.

As Jesus was crucified, pain like fire surged along the fingers and up the arms from the median nerves. Jesus pushed up with his legs with the weight on His pierced feet. The agony of the nerves between the metatarsal bones in the feet would have been intense. His arms grew tired. His muscles cramped. He could not push up any longer. He became paralyzed. He laboriously breathed in, but it is an almost impossible task to breathe out. He fought for air. Yet, Jesus managed to utter seven short statements.

His mission of coming to earth to die for your sin is almost complete. Jesus cried out, “It is finished!” What is finished? Your life of purposelessness, your Hell, your sin, your separation from God….all finished through the complete work of the Cross as Jesus died for you!

How Jesus died is not as overwhelming as why He died. The most significant truth about the Cross is that when Jesus died, He became your substitute. He took your punishment. He took your shame. In death, Jesus gave you life!

Dear Lord, thank you for completing the sacrifice necessary for my sin and rebellion! You are an awesome, merciful Savior! Amen.

The Fifth Word

"I am thirsty." John 19:28

Jesus’ death on the Cross is full of irony: the Eternal God experiencing death, the King of Glory enduring humiliation, the Provider of spiritual nourishment panting for water. Jesus, the Living Water of salvation was thirsty.

During the Feast of Tabernacles, Jews would pray for rain to fall to provide for their thirsty people and crops. It was during one of these feasts that Jesus announced, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come and drink”—speaking of what He had to offer (John 7:37). When a women with a checkered past went to the well to get water, Jesus told her, “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (John 4:14). Jesus identified Himself as the source of living water.

However, on the Cross, Jesus experienced the physical and emotional dehydration of paying for your sin and mine. Jesus, who is 100% God and 100% man, cried out for a drink of water. Jesus’ physical thirst reminds us of our need for spiritual refreshing. Only the Risen Jesus can provide for our deepest spiritual thirst.

There is not a longing that Jesus cannot satisfy:
Pleasure (Psalm 16:11)
Salvation (Romans 1:16-18)
Forgiveness (1 John 1:9)
Acceptance (Ephesians 1:6)
Recognition (Revelation 1:6)

The stream for our provision began to flow before the foundation of the world, to the Cross, the empty tomb, disciples, early church, reformation, to America with the pilgrims, to your heart when you were saved. After 2000 years of people coming to the Cross, it is still a full stream. If you thirst today, Jesus will quench your longing for living water.

Not only does Jesus provide us with spiritual water, He flows through us so that we can bring nourishment to others who need water. We are Jesus’ channel of blessing. You can never supply water until you drink for yourselves. Satisfaction is conveying the living water, moving it along to someone else and praying for God to open up a channel in their heart.

Vibrant, growing Christians are clean streams, not stagnant pools. They are not inward-focused collecting ponds. God’s Word tells us that there is life where the river flows (Ezekiel 47:9). Where is the river in our church? Is it flowing in your heart?

In the Holy Land, Galilee’s waters are alive; the Jordan River is flowing and rushing. However, the Dead Sea is dead; it only receives and does not give. We can become so satisfied with our own salvation, discipleship, and concerns that our mission becomes stagnant. And we wonder why things stink!

While the world thirsts…Jesus Christ is Living Water!

Dear Lord, just as you were thirsty on the Cross, the world around me is thirsty for meaning and purpose. Only you can provide living water. Flow through me! Flow through me! Amen.

Day Four of "7 Words That Will Change Your Life"

The Fourth Word

“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Mark 15:34

As Jesus was dying on the cross, He echoed the beginning of Psalm 22, which reads: My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help? Every day I call to you, my God, but you do not answer. Every night you hear my voice, but I find no relief. (vs.1-2)

In the words of the psalmist Jesus found a way to express the cry of his heart: Why had God abandoned Him? Why did His Father turn His back on Jesus in His moment of greatest agony? This side of heaven, we will never fully know what Jesus was experienceing in this moment. Was He asking this question because, in the mystery of His suffering, He didn’t know God had abandoned Him? Or was His cry not so much a question as an expression of profound agony? Or was it both?

What we do know is that Jesus entered into the Hell of separation from God. The Father abandoned Him because Jesus took upon Himself the penalty of our sins. In that excruciating moment, He experienced something far more horrible than physical pain. The beloved Son of God knew what it was like to be rejected by the Father. As we read in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (NIV).

The Father abandoned the Son for our sake, for the salvation of the world. But can we really grasp the mystery and the majesty of this truth? Hardly. As Martin Luther once said, “God forsaking God. Who can understand it?” Yet even in our miniscule grasp of this reality, it calls us to confession, to humility,
to worship, to adoration.

O Lord Jesus, though I will never fully grasp the wonder and horror of your abandonment by the Father, every time I read this I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Thank you for suffering for me. I offer myself to you in gratitude and praise. Thank you dear Lord, for what you suffered. Thank you for taking my place. Thank you for being forsaken by the Father so that I might never be. Amen.

The Third Word

“Dear woman, here is your son.” John 19:26

There is nothing more difficult than a mother outliving her child. In the midst of the crushing blow of death Jesus was concerned about the wellbeing of His grieving mother. In overwhelming compassion, Jesus looked to John - the only disciple with the courage to stay with Jesus until the end - to take
care of Mary. This was important to Mary; to know that someone would be there for her in the days ahead.

In this tender scene, we discover an important truth: Jesus is concerned about us and will take care of us. Sometimes we forget that Jesus has a purpose in suffering. When we experience loss and pain, Jesus is close by, making provisions for us - using trials and pain for His eternal purpose.

God can provide for those He loves, even in the midst of the greatest tragedies. The crucifixion is the best example of this. Jesus, the most kind, gentle,compassionate, powerful man was taken and brutally murdered. Mary, his mother, watched as her young son was tortured to death. The Devil worked
through the heart of Judas so that Jesus was betrayed for thirty pieces of silver. How could God allow something so unjust? Where was the provision of God for Jesus and for Mary in this horrific moment?

Jesus knew that His difficulty would be the pathway to the most essential provision in the history of humankind - the gift of forgiveness and pardon to all who would believe. The Bible says, “It pleased God to bruise Him” [speaking of Jesus’ death]. It was through the death of Jesus that God accomplished
that unmerited work of grace and mercy. God allowed the death of His Son for greater purpose - your eternal joy and salvation. Likewise, God allowed Mary to witness the brutal murder of her son Jesus so that she could see Him rise again on Easter Sunday! The risen Jesus said, “Did not the Christ have
to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” (Luke 24:26)

Can God take our personal pain and suffering and create eternal joy in some way? Choose to believe that God can and that God will! Will God provide for us in the midst of our confusion and suffering? Absolutely - when we call on Him!

In our worst pain, Jesus is near. Jesus is available to provide everything we need. Nothing is too difficult for Him. Jesus is never too busy for us. Even when Jesus was bearing the sin of the world on the Cross, He thought of Mary...He thought of you. Perhaps you are grieving or hurting right now. If you would look up to the cross, you would see Jesus providing for your every need. Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus is letting you know, as He did His mother, “Here is your son (provider) - your present and future needs met.”

What great news!

Dear Lord, I need You. You are all I need. When I feel alone, abandoned, hurt, bereaved, I look to the Cross. I hear Your voice. In Your plans for me, You have everything in place to take care of me and those I love. If You provide through a person or circumstance - it does not matter. All provision comes from your plan and your hands. Amen.

Day Two of "7 Words That Will Change Your Life"

The Second Word:
“I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43

As Jesus hung on the cross, he was mocked by the leaders and the soldiers. One of the criminals being crucified with him added his own measure of scorn. But the other crucified criminal sensed that Jesus was being treated unjustly. After speaking up for Jesus, he cried out, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (vs. 42).

Jesus responded to this criminal, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise” (vs. 43). The word paradise comes from a Greek word that means “garden,” and was used in the Greek Old Testament as a word for the Garden of Eden. In Judaism, in the time of Jesus, it was associated with heaven, and also with the future when God would restore all things to the perfection of the Garden. Paradise was sometimes thought to be a place where righteous people went after death. This seems to be the way Jesus uses paradise in this passage.

Thus, we have encountered one of the most astounding and encouraging verses in all of Scripture. Jesus promised that the criminal would be with Him in paradise. Yet the text of Luke gives us no reason to believe the man had been a follower of Jesus, or even a believer in Him. The criminal might have felt sorry for his sins, but he did not obviously repent. Rather, his cry to be remembered seems more like a desperate, last-gasp effort.

Though we should make every effort to have the right theology, and though we should live our lives each day as disciples of Jesus, in the end, our relationship with Him comes down to simple trust. “Jesus, remember me,” we cry. And Jesus, embodying the mercy of God, says to us, “You will be with me in paradise.” We are welcome there, not because we have the right theology, and not because we are living rightly, but because God is merciful and we have put our trust in Jesus.

Dear Lord Jesus, how I wonder at Your grace and mercy! When we cry out to You, You hear us. When we ask You to remember us when You come into Your kingdom, You offer the promise of paradise. Your mercy, dear Lord, exceeds anything we might imagine. It embraces us, encourages us, heals us.

O Lord, though my situation is so different from the criminal who cried out to You, I am nevertheless quite like him. Today I live, trusting You and You alone. My life is in Your hands, now, and in the world to come.

Remember me when you come into your kingdom! Jesus, remember me today as I seek to live within Your kingdom! Amen.
