Can the Bible Be Trusted?

Our next Theology CafĂ© will address this important question.  Many people in our modern world do not believe that the Scriptures are reliable or trustworthy. How can we be sure that what we know as “The Bible” is God’s Word?  How do we know we have the right Hebrew/Greek texts?  How do we know that these texts are translated properly into English?  How do we know that the accounts in the Bible are accurate?  Which Bible translations should I trust?  This will be a great opportunity to understand the basis for your faith—God’s Holy Word.

My story:   As a music major in college—this was before I had realized my calling to be a pastor—I went to the academic dean and asked (begged) him if I could substitute Biblical Greek for some of my routine course work.  Why?  I had a passion for God’s Word.  Well, he thought I was nuts, but let me change my course schedule.  Now, as a pastor, I consider the two years of undergraduate Greek with Dr. David Farnell (who now serves at Master’s Seminary in California) as the most important years of my preparation.  He taught us to understand the Greek language and how the Bible came to us.  I went on to seminary and did my master’s work in biblical languages.  I was in the first graduating class of biblical language specialists in my seminary.  My heart beats for helping Christians understand that the Book they read and cherish is authoritative, accurate, and powerful.
